What excessive sweating treatment is

For some people sweating becomes a persistent issue that affects daily life and self-confidence. Axillary hyperhidrosis means excessive underarm sweating, and it affects men and women equally. Sweating in response to heat, exercise or stress is normal; patients with axillary hyperhidrosis sweat excessively without those triggers.

What to expect from sweating treatment

Consultation & preparation

Do not shave the underarms for 24 hours before treatment, and avoid antiperspirant on the day of your appointment. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamin E and fish oil for 48 hours beforehand where it is safe to stop them.

During treatment

How does the treatment work?

Sweat glands are switched on by a nerve signal. The injected protein temporarily blocks that signal at the treated site, so the glands in that area produce far less sweat. Nothing is removed and no gland is destroyed, which is why the effect wears off over months and the treatment is repeated rather than permanent.

How effective is it, and how fast?

Treatment is extremely effective in the underarms, reducing sweating by around 70 to 95 per cent. Results start to appear after around 48 hours with the full effect at one week. Most patients have treatment every six months, over which time the effect gradually wears off. There is no evidence that this treatment causes rebound sweating, where other areas of the body sweat more to compensate.

What if I have already tried other treatments?

Most patients have. Dr Harriet’s patients have often tried iontophoresis, oral medications, prescription-strength antiperspirants containing aluminium chloride, or in some cases surgery, before coming to her. These are frequently found to be ineffective or to carry significant side effects. Injectable treatment offers a safe and effective alternative for reducing sweating.

Why does the anxiety connection matter?

Anxiety and axillary hyperhidrosis often go together. Excessive underarm sweating causes real distress, which reduces confidence, and stress then worsens the sweating. Patients avoid social situations, public speaking, even handshakes, for fear of embarrassment. Breaking that cycle at the sweating end is often what allows the anxiety around it to settle.

Aftercare

Avoid antiperspirant, strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and alcohol for 24 hours. Sweating begins to reduce after around 48 hours, with the full effect at one week. Most patients return for re-treatment at around six months as the effect wears off.

How much will the treatment reduce my sweating?

In the underarms, treatment is extremely effective and reduces sweating by around 70 to 95 per cent. It is a reduction rather than complete elimination, which is intentional, since some sweating is normal and necessary. Dr Harriet will discuss realistic expectations for your particular pattern at consultation.

Will I start sweating more somewhere else?

There is no evidence that this treatment causes rebound sweating, where other areas of the body start to sweat more to compensate. This is a common worry among patients and it is not borne out. Dr Harriet is happy to talk through the evidence with you at your consultation.

How often will I need treatment?

Most patients have treatment every six months, during which time the effect gradually wears off. Some find they can stretch the interval slightly, particularly if their sweating is seasonal. Many patients book ahead for spring so they are covered through the summer months.

Can areas other than the underarms be treated?
