What to expect from filler dissolving

Consultation & preparation

A patch test is required before treatment and must be booked as a separate earlier appointment. Bring any information you have about the filler being dissolved, including product and approximate date. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and blood-thinning supplements for 48 hours where it is safe to stop them.

How does dissolving work?

The enzyme is specifically formulated to break down hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers. Injected into the treated area, it breaks the cross-links holding the gel together so the body clears it in the normal way. Because it acts only on hyaluronic acid, your own tissue is unaffected beyond the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the immediate area, which replenishes.

What can it correct?

It allows correction of undesirable or overfilled results from dermal filler treatment, and it can address complications including lumps, asymmetry and vascular occlusion resulting from previous filler injections. Filler reversal can also help patients return to a more natural and balanced appearance where work has accumulated over years without anyone standing back and assessing the whole face.

Why is a patch test required?

Allergic reactions to the enzyme are rare but possible, and severe reactions including anaphylaxis, while very uncommon, can occur. A patch test before treatment is therefore required and is not optional. Other potential side effects are swelling and redness, mild discomfort or pain during and after the procedure, and minor bruising or temporary skin discolouration.

Aftercare

The treated area may take a few days to settle fully, during which any initial swelling or redness should subside. Most patients resume normal activities shortly after the procedure. Expect the area to look flatter than the final result initially, and do not plan new filler until it has settled.

Can you dissolve filler placed by another practitioner?

Yes. Dr Harriet regularly treats patients unhappy with work carried out elsewhere and does so without judgement. Bring whatever information you have about what was placed and when, since knowing the product and the timeline helps her plan the correction, but treatment is possible even where those details are unknown.

Will everything be dissolved, or can it be partial?

It can be partial. The number of injections and the amount of enzyme used depend on the level of correction you want, and the process is carefully controlled to achieve that. Where you want to soften an overfilled area rather than remove everything, Dr Harriet will stage the treatment across appointments.

What is the recovery like?

Recovery is typically straightforward and most patients resume normal activities shortly after the procedure. The treated area may take a few days to settle fully, during which any initial swelling or redness should subside. The area often looks flatter than the eventual result for the first few days.

Can I have new filler afterwards?

Yes, but not immediately. The area needs time to settle so that you and Dr Harriet are working from a true baseline rather than from residual swelling. She will advise on the right interval at your appointment, and will usually want to see the settled result before planning anything new.

Is dissolving painful?

Most patients find it manageable. There can be mild discomfort or pain during and after the procedure, and the sensation differs from having filler placed. Dr Harriet will discuss pain management with you beforehand and can use topical numbing cream where appropriate for the area being treated.
