What to expect from dermal fillers
Consultation & preparation
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamin E and fish oil for 48 hours before treatment where it is safe for you to stop them, since all increase bruising risk. Come makeup-free, and let Dr Harriet know if you have any history of cold sores.
During treatment
Aftercare
Avoid pressure, massage and makeup on the treated area for 12 hours, and skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for 24 hours. Swelling settles over a few days and any bruising may take up to a week. Allow flexibility in your diary around important social events.

How long do dermal fillers last?
The effects typically endure for several months to years depending on the product, the area treated and your own metabolism. Areas that move a great deal, such as the lips, break the gel down faster than structural areas like the cheeks or jawline. Dr Harriet will give you a realistic timeframe for your specific plan.
How many syringes will I need?
That depends entirely on how much volume has been lost and what you want to achieve. Dr Harriet guides patients on the number of syringes needed rather than selling a fixed package, and she will often recommend building gradually across appointments rather than doing everything at once.
Will dermal fillers look obvious?
Not when they are planned around your proportions rather than filling one area in isolation. Dr Harriet assesses the whole face and treats to restore balance, and her philosophy is refinement rather than exaggeration. The overfilled look comes from treating a single area repeatedly without reference to the rest of the face.
Is there swelling or bruising afterwards?
Downtime is minimal but there is a slightly higher chance of swelling or bruising than with anti-wrinkle injections, particularly in delicate areas such as the lips. Swelling can last a few days and any bruising may take up to a week to fully resolve. Allow some flexibility around important social events.
Can dermal fillers be dissolved?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be broken down with a prescription-only enzyme, which is what makes them the safest filler class available. Dr Harriet offers dissolving as a standalone treatment, including for filler placed by other practitioners. A patch test is required beforehand.
