Excessive Underarm Sweating Treatment in London
Excessive underarm sweating treatment in London reduces sweating by around 70 to 95 per cent for patients whose sweating is unrelated to heat, exercise or stress.
Overview
Understanding excessive underarm sweating
For some people, sweating becomes a persistent issue that affects their daily lives and self-confidence. Axillary hyperhidrosis means excessive underarm sweating and it commonly affects both men and women.
Sweating in response to heat, exercise or stress is normal. Patients with axillary hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating that is often unrelated to any of those triggers, which is what distinguishes the condition from simply sweating a lot.
Anxiety and axillary hyperhidrosis often go hand in hand. The sweating causes real distress and reduced confidence, and that stress and emotional tension then make the sweating worse, creating a vicious cycle. Patients avoid social situations, public speaking, even handshakes, fearing embarrassment. Treating the sweating is usually what allows the anxiety around it to settle.
Why it happens
What causes excessive underarm sweating?
- Overactivity of the nerve signal driving the eccrine sweat glands
- Primary focal hyperhidrosis, which typically begins in adolescence and has a genetic component
- Anxiety and emotional tension, which worsen an already overactive response
- Secondary hyperhidrosis from an underlying medical condition or medication
- Hormonal change, including the menopause

Common
questions
Is my sweating actually hyperhidrosis?
The distinguishing feature is that the sweating is often unrelated to heat, exercise or stress. Sweating heavily in a hot room or during exercise is normal. Sweating through clothing while sitting still in a cool room is not, and that pattern is what characterises axillary hyperhidrosis.
How much will treatment help?
Treatment is extremely effective in the underarms, reducing sweating by around 70 to 95 per cent. The results start to appear after around 48 hours with the full effect after one week. It is a substantial reduction rather than complete elimination, which is intentional.
Will I sweat more elsewhere instead?
There is no evidence that this treatment causes rebound sweating, where other areas of the body start to sweat more to compensate. It is a very common concern among patients considering treatment and it is not supported by the evidence.
What if antiperspirants have not worked?
Most of Dr Harriet’s patients have already tried several options, including iontophoresis, oral medications, prescription-strength antiperspirants containing aluminium chloride, or even surgery. These are often found to be ineffective or to carry significant side effects. Injectable treatment offers a safe and effective alternative.
